“A once-in-a-life-time experience” – the UNIDO Internship Programme
“When I was accepted for the internship, I was really excited and I am still exited. It is a challenging job and a huge opportunity for me,” says one of the 67 interns from 33 different nations that have so far participated in the UNIDO Internship Programme in 2013.
To give a voice to these young professionals, UNIDO’s Advocacy and External Relations Group, together with the organization’s Human Resource Management Branch, recently produced the UNIDO intern video. It gives an insight into these young professionals’ experiences during their internship. Riveting, enriching, challenging and unforgettable are just some of the words the interns use to describe their time with UNIDO.
“I am gaining valuable skills that I can later use within the UN or elsewhere,” concludes one intern in the video. The UNIDO Internship Programme has been established to promote a better understanding of the Organization's goals and objectives to students from diverse academic backgrounds. Under the supervision of a staff member, interns receive on-the-job training while providing valuable support to his or her unit’s day-to-day work or conducting research into issues of direct relevance to UNIDO's activities. “The mere possibility to work with people from all over the world and to learn from the cultures of interns, staff and consultants is truly rewarding,” said another.
An internship lasts from 90 days up to nine months and can be in fields as diverse as Research and Statistics, Legal Affairs, and Energy, Environment and Climate Change.
In 2012, more than 130 interns from 50 nations had the opportunity to gain an insight into how attempts are made to solve problems confronting developing countries in the area of industrialization. “I was afraid when I applied, but I think you shouldn’t be because there are a lot of opportunities,” are the words of advice that a current intern offers her successors.
