UNIDO supports Asia conference on implementing Rio+20 commitments

HANOI, 20 March 2013 - Delegates from 25 countries from the Asian-Pacific region and representatives of international organizations, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), met in Hanoi to share experiences and best practices in the pursuit of implementing the Rio+20 Conference commitments on resource efficiency.

The conference, “3Rs in the Context of Rio+20 Outcomes – The Future We Want”, focused on the exchange of experiences and best practices of 3R (reuse, reduce and recycle) policy development and implementation. Participants discussed topics relating to waste management and e-waste, chemicals and hazardous waste, and plastics in the coastal and marine environment.

In this context, UNIDO Industrial Development Officer and facilitator of the debate, Jerome Stucki, presented the Green Industry Platform (link), a UNIDO-led global partnership intended to catalyse, mobilize and mainstream action on Green Industry around the world.

Participants agreed that programmes for cleaner production, green growth strategies, new technologies and relevant institutions should be further developed. They also adopted the Hanoi 3R Declaration on sustainable 3R goals for Asia for 2013-2023. The declaration presents around 30 goals applying to waste management in urban, industrial and rural areas which are to be achieved by 2023. It also addresses new and emerging waste, such as electronic waste, mining waste, and plastics in the coastal and marine environment and in its annex offers a set of core indicators.

The conference was co-organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Viet Nam, the Ministry of the Environment of the Government of Japan, and the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), with the support of UNIDO and other international organizations, partner institutions and donor agencies.
