UNIDO teams up with private sector, vocational training centres to share industrial skills development know-how

STUTTGART, 26 February 2014 – The annual workshop of partners of the Opens external link in new windowLearning and Knowledge Development Facility, hosted by Festo, a German industrial control and automation company, ended in Stuttgart today.

The Facility is run by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. It brings together companies, vocational training centres, development agencies and donors to facilitate knowledge sharing on innovative public-private development partnership approaches in industrial skills development. Other private sector members include Volvo and Scania.

Participants at the four-day workshop shared best practices and discussed, among other topics, ways of attracting more women to industrial skills development programmes. Learnings generated among the partners will be summarized in a series of Opens external link in new windowHow to – guides to be replicated in future projects.

“The workshop not only provided me with a useful learning experience but also allowed to network with many companies, vocational training centres and UNIDO,” said Zeneba Tesfaye, General Manager of the Selam Vocational Training Centre in Ethiopia, which hosts the public-private development partnership between Volvo, UNIDO and the Swedish Development Agency for Heavy Duty Machinery and Commercial Vehicles.

“Industrial activities are having an important impact on nations’ wealth creation worldwide. This requires however innovation in technologies and industrial skills development especially for young people. To be efficient in our objectives we need to help and learn from each other. Together we can meet our goals faster,” said Nader Imani, Head of Global Education at Festo Didactic.

Managers of the participating vocational training centres also had a chance to discuss and share experiences. Based on these discussions, a gap analysis was made and the participating companies were asked to advise on ways to address these challenges.

On the sidelines of the event, the Project Steering Committee of the Learning and Knowledge Development Facility approved the WorldSkills Foundation as the newest member of the Facility.

“We are excited to be part of the Learning and Knowledge Development Facility. We all have a common goal of industrial skills development especially for the young people in the developing world. We can’t do it on our own; we need to help each other to meet this goal,” said Tjerk Dusseldorp, Chairman of the Opens external link in new windowWorldSkills Foundation (WSF) and Honorary President of WorldSkills International.

The WorldSkills Foundation will contribute to the Learning and Knowledge Development Facility by sharing expertise on exchange and comparison of world-class competency standards in the industrial trades and service sectors. They will also work to support gender balance requirements for Facility projects, by promoting female role models drawn from their international Expert networks.

The WorldSkills Foundation aims to improve our world with the power of skills. It does that by raising worldwide awareness of the essential contribution that skills and high standards of competence make to the achievement of economic success and personal fulfilment. One of the major goals within WSF – in leveraging the global WorldSkills International movement – is to reach out to developing countries, facilitating sustainable vocational skills development and raising levels of skill competencies to international standards.
