UNIDO and Republic of Korea’s Energy Management Corporation to support renewable energy, energy efficiency activities in developing countries

VIENNA, 4 April 2014 – Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMCO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have strengthened their partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to inclusive and sustainable industrial development . They will work closely to promote sustainable energy policies and technical cooperation in support of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in developing countries.
 
A memorandum of understanding on this was signed in Vienna today by BYUN Jong-Rip, President of KEMCO, and LI Yong, the Director General of UNIDO.
 
“Sustainable energy for productive uses is a critical component for achieving inclusive and sustainable industrial development. This memorandum illustrates our recognition of the impact renewable energy and energy efficiency have in increasing competitiveness of industries. We are ready to work closely with KEMCO in driving forward the sustainable energy agenda,” said Director General Li.
 
President Byun added: “KEMCO has been successfully leading Korea’s transformation into a low-carbon, energy-efficient society. With 30 years of experience in addressing the national challenges, including energy security and climate change, KEMCO is well equipped to provide technical support to developing countries in achieving the sustainable energy goals and further a low-carbon energy future.”
 
KEMCO is an agency of the Government of the Republic of Korea responsible for the implementation of energy conservation policies and energy efficiency improvement measures as well as climate change mitigation activities. It was established in 1980 by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy under the “Rational Energy Utilization Act”. Its primary function is nationwide energy management by providing services that vary from technical and financial support to administrative services, thereby pursuing the ultimate goal of building an environment-friendly socio-economic structure.

Since 2012, KEMCO and UNIDO have been collaborating on the implementation of a pilot project, “Sustainable energy and climate change capacity building in Eastern Africa”.
