VIENNA, 25 November 2014 - The Director General opened the 42nd session of UNIDO's Industrial Development Board (IDB), taking place in Vienna.

WASHINGTON D.C., 20-21 November 2014 - The Director General attended the Chief Executives Board (CEB) meeting, which was hosted by the World Bank. The CEB is the longest-standing and highest-level coordination forum of the UN system. It meets biannually and is chaired by the UN Secretary-General. It comprises 29 Executive Heads of the UN and its Funds and Programmes, the Specialized Agencies, including the Bretton Woods Institutions (The World Bank and IMF), and related Organizations (WTO and IAEA). The CEB provides broad guidance, coordination and strategic direction for the system as a whole in the areas under the responsibility of executive heads.
WASHINGTON D.C., 18 November 2014 - The Director General met Yiping Zhou, United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on South-South Cooperation and Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) on the margins of the GSSD Expo 2014 at the Organization of American States (OAS) Headquarters.

Luncheon with heads of Delegation of the European Union
VIENNA, 7 November 2014 - The Director General attended a luncheon of heads of delegations of the European Union (EU). Commending the good relations between the EU and UNIDO, Head of the EU Delegation to the international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Gyorgyi Martin Zanathy, congratulated the Director General on the successful second ISID Forum and looked forward to contributing to the forthcoming session of the Board. The Director General expressed his appreciation for the EU’s continued support to UNIDO and the successful cooperation of the two institutions, referring in particular to the recent third EU-UNIDO high-level review meeting hosted by UNIDO. He also briefed the heads of delegations about his recent missions to European Member States and reiterated his readiness to further strengthen the existing cooperation.
Opening of UNIDO's 2nd ISID Forum
VIENNA, 4 November 2014 - UNIDO Director General LI Yong opened UNIDO's 2nd ISID Forum together with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Hailemariam Desalegn, Prime Minister of Ethiopia and Mahammed Dionne, Prime Minister of Senegal.
Press Breakfast hosted by Director General
VIENNA, 31 October 2014 - Director General Li today hosted a press breakfast, which was attended by some 15 journalists, representing a range of news outlets, including Die Presse, Der Standard, DPA, EFE, Kyodo News, Xinhua, RIA Novosti, IPS, Mainichi Shimbun, and Sekai Nippo. The Director General was asked about UNIDO’s mandate, its role in the UN system and its activities, and about its support for the post-2015 development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the second ISID Forum that will be held from 4 to 5 November. Journalists were also interested in the Programmes for Country Partnerships for Ethiopia and Senegal that will be presented at the forum next week.
Signing ceremony with Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC)
VIENNA, 30 October 2014 – Director General LI Yong and the Member of the Board (Minister) in charge of industry and agriculture at the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), Sergey Sidorsky, today signed a joint declaration on cooperation between the two entities. The declaration was agreed on in support of the further deepening of cooperation between UNIDO and the EEC in the area of inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The event was attended by the Permanent Representatives and diplomats from the Permanent Missions of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation.
Director General on mission to Switzerland
GENEVA, 29 October 2014 – The Director General met with Michael Møller, the Acting Head of the United Nations Office in Geneva. The Director General informed Møller of UNIDO’s new partnership approach, while at the same time underscoring the importance he accords to Delivering as One. They further discussed the role of industry in socio-economic development and on the importance of having a specific goal on industrial development in the post-2015 development agenda. Møller invited the Director General to conduct regular briefings for the Geneva-based Permanent Missions.
GENEVA, 29 October 2014 – The Director General briefed Permanent Representatives in Geneva, together with heads of United Nation’s agencies and UNIDO partner institutions. He emphasized the Lima Declaration, UNIDO’s resulting mandate of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) and how the Organization plans to operationalize ISID. The Director General highlighted the crucial role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in this regard and how he intends to involve the private sector. He also made an appeal to Member States to maintain a focus on industry in the finalization of the post-2015 development agenda. In turn, Permanent Representatives expressed strong support for ISID and acknowledged the important role that UNIDO plays in furthering socially inclusive and environmentally sound industrial development in developing countries.
GENEVA, 29 October 2014 – The Director General addressed an African Union (AU) meeting and thanked the AU for the strong support to UNIDO's mandate of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID). He underlined Africa's continuing position as a main priority for the Organization. The Director General also stressed the need to continue UNIDO-AU cooperation, especially within UNIDO's new partnership approach. The Director General reaffirmed UNIDO's support for the AU’s Agenda 2063 “The Future We Want for Africa”. Participants expressed their continuing commitment to support industrialization as part of the post-2015 agenda. They welcomed the new partnership approach and looked forward to learn from the experiences of the two pilot countries to be presented at the upcoming ISID Forum.
GENEVA, 29 October 2014 – The Director General met with Jean-Marie Ehouzou, Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the African Union, François Xavier Ngarambé, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the United Nations and heads of other international organizations in Geneva. Expressing his appreciation for the long-standing successful partnership between the AU and UNIDO, the Director General thanked them for the AU’s strong voice in supporting industry’s prominent inclusion in the post-2015 development agenda. Noting the breadth of UNIDO-AU technical cooperation, he emphasized the importance of South-South cooperation. Ehouzou and Ngarambé emphasized the importance of industrial development in Africa, most notably with regard to agribusiness. They both reiterated their strong support for the Director General's new approach.
BERN, 28 October 2014 – The Director General met Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, State Secretary and Director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and Director of the Foreign Economic Affairs Directorate. During their meeting, the State Secretary expressed her continued strong support for UNIDO. Both parties agreed that a celebration would be organized to mark the 20th Anniversary of the National Cleaner Production Centres/Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production Programme that is to take place in 2015.

Director General on mission to Finland
HELSINKI, 20 October 2014 – In continuation of the already existing close cooperation, UNIDO and the Government of Finland agreed to assist the economic development and trade capacity of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Finland will provide EUR 4.2 million to support UNIDO in the years 2014 and 2015 in the programme areas of trade capacity-building, food security through agribusiness and agro-industry, as well as the creation of green employment through sustainable forest utilization and management.The Director General, LI Yong, and Lenita Toivakka, Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, exchanged letters confirming the agreement during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.
Director General on mission to Czech Republic
PRAGUE, 15 October 2014 - The Director General LI Yong met with Jan Mladek, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic to discuss areas of cooperation and agree on future joint activities. The Minister expressed a strong interest in deepening cooperation with UNIDO, explaining that the Czech Republic, as an industrial country, is ready to share its development experiences with other partners worldwide using UNIDO platforms and mechanisms. The Director General emphasized the crucial importance of involving the private sector into technical cooperation activities through various instruments, such as investment and trade fairs for stimulating business matching and information exchange, study tours, strengthening public-private partnership, experience sharing, capacity building of business support institutions, interaction through UNIDO’s field network, and piloting holistic country programmes. It was agreed that in 2015 the Czech Republic will host a seminar to discuss concrete opportunities for cooperation with the private sector. The meeting was also a strong indication that the Czech Republic is an important donor and partner for promoting technical cooperation in recipient countries.
PRAGUE, 15 October 2014 - The Director General LI Yong met with Martin Tlapa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The Director General thanked the Deputy Minister for his support to UNIDO’s mandate of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) and expressed commitment to the strong relationship between the Czech Republic and UNIDO. The Deputy Minister spoke of the importance of industry to the Czech economy, as well as for development in the region and globally. The Czech Republic’s prioritises assistance to the Western Balkans, Mongolia, Georgia and Vietnam and is keen to promote the Czech private sector’s involvement in UNIDO technical cooperation activities. The joint organization of a seminar to explore how different stakeholders from the Czech Republic can work with UNIDO on various issues and projects.

Director General on mission to Slovakia
BRATISLAVA,13 October 2014 - Director General LI Yong met with Peter Javorchik, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia. The meeting was a strong indication of the willingness of both parties to work together and cooperate in the design and implementation of technical cooperation projects, and in global forum activities, especially those promoting SME outreach. Slovakia is ready to cooperate on waste water management or in the agri-business technical cooperation projects and is also interested in future collaboration on projects to support and promote SMEs. Director General LI Yong welcomed the prospect of partnerships with the private sector of Slovakia in UNIDO technical cooperation project implementation. The Director General briefed the State Secretary on UNIDO’s thematic priorities and provided an update of the global discussions on the Post-2015 development agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industrialization, infrastructure and innovation.
BRATISLAVA,13 October 2014 - Director General LI Yong met with Rastislav Chovanec (second left), State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy of Slovakia to discuss cooperation and support for a UNIDO technical cooperation projects in the area of waste water management or the agro-food industrial sector. In terms of future joint activities in UNIDO technical cooperation projects, the Government of Slovakia has agreed to propose areas of collaboration in thematic areas aligned with the priorities of Slovak Aid. The State Secretary also highlighted the importance of SME support and promotion as an area of future cooperation. Both parties agreed that UNIDO should take advantage of the accumulated experience and expertise of the Slovakian private sector in its project implementation activities.

They discussed the possibilities of further strengthening collaboration between UNIDO and Italian Institutions and Agencies working in the field of sustainable energy, cleaner production and investment promotion, with a particular focus on Africa.
