UNIDO to assist Uganda with industrial development

KAMPALA, 13 September 2013 - A delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has been in Uganda to develop a Country Programme, which will form the basis for interventions to assist the government in developing a sustainable industrial sector based on a value chain approach.

The delegation led by Jean Bakole, UNIDO Representative to the African Union and Regional Director for Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda, has held  discussions with government representatives and other stakeholders regarding the specific interventions required to strengthen the various sub-sectors which constitute Uganda’s industrial sector. 

Consultations were held in Kampala with national stakeholders, including the Minister of State for Industry and Technology, Hon. James Mutende, officials of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives (MITC) and the National Development Planning Authority, and representatives of the private sector and United Nations agencies including FAO, IFAD and UNDP. Consultations were also held with members of the donor community including, the missions of Austria, China, Norway, and Sweden, the European Union delegation to Uganda and the US Agency for International Development.

The UNIDO team travelled to the Gulu District where they held consultations with District executives and other stakeholders, and visited the Northern Uganda Youth Development Centre and the Gulu District Farmer Association, where UNIDO, in collaboration with other development partners, is implementing a project on business information centre, agro-processing and use of agro-waste for energy.

At the end of the mission, the UNIDO team presented the results of the week-long consultations to the Honourable Minister and a cross-section of stakeholders. The key sub-sectors identified for interventions under the UNIDO-Uganda Country Programme which will run for four years (2014-2017) are: Agro-industry and agribusiness; Renewable energy; Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and the private sector; and Quality, Standards and Conformity infrastructure development related to manufacturing value addition.

UNIDO’s past interventions helped establish the Uganda Cleaner Production Centre and built up the capacities of the Uganda Bureau of Standards, the Uganda Industrial Research Institution and the Uganda Investment Authority.
