UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller and Swedish Ambassador Annika Markovic have officially launched the Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) Programme at Sweden House in Vienna. With funding from Sida, this initiative builds on past successes to scale up energy efficiency efforts across SADC, EAC, and now ECOWAS, driving sustainable industrialization and climate resilience. Fully aligned with African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, the African Union Industrialization Strategy, and Agenda 2030, the programme promotes green jobs, inclusive economic development, and innovative clean-tech solutions. UNIDO & the UK announced the first demonstration projects to be supported by the Accelerate-to-Demonstrate (A2D) Facility. The UK-funded A2D Facility accelerates pilot demonstration projects with innovative technologies for climate action in developing countries. The projects will help to bridge the commercialization gap in key areas for the energy transition: clean hydrogen, smart energy, industrial decarbonization and critical minerals. In Kenya we will work on greening the local tea industry, in Namibia on clean fertilizer production with clean hydrogen, in Nepal on smart systems & grid resilience for energy efficiency, in Nigeria on a peer-to peer energy sharing system & in Tanzania on developing local battery manufacturing for two-and three-wheel motorcycles.
