19-22 July 2023, 14th Meeting of the Clean Energy Ministerial and G20 Meetings, Goa, India
UNIDO, upon the invitation of the Government of India, served as the dedicated knowledge partner for the High-Level Dialogue on Industry Decarbonization at the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial Council on 21 July in Goa, India. Bringing together Ministers and high-level representatives from the governments of Saudi Arabia, Japan, India, Germany and Canada, as well as private sector executives, the Dialogue explored how to put heavy emitting industries on track towards net-zero goals.
To continue building momentum to COP28 in December, UNIDO launched a call to action inviting partners across government, private sector, financial institutions and civil society to commit to collaborative action and to unlock financing for industrial decarbonization in developing countries and emerging economies.
To achieve this, Ministerial-level discussions were coupled with a rich and diverse programme of events which included CEO-Ministerial roundtables/high-level dialogues, over 75 thematic side events organised by the clean energy community, an impressive Technology Showcase, an Electric Vehicle Rally and a broad range of networking and cultural events.
Following the occasion of the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial Council, the G20 Energy Ministers met under India’s G20 Presidency, with the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ in Goa, India, on 22 July 2023. In this context, the aim of the meeting was to share, collaborate and build on the sense of responsibility and solidarity amongst the G20 members in accelerating the clean, sustainable, just, affordable and inclusive energy transitions, following various pathways, as a means of enabling secure, sustainable equitable, shared and inclusive growth.
During the event, UNIDO's Deputy Director General and Managing Director, Ciyong Zou, emphasized the need to catalyze collective action between public and private stakeholders to harmonize low- and near-zero emission standards for hydrogen, steel and cement, and to accelerate technology deployment. Doing so has the potential to improve market transparency and enable financing flows. The Deputy Director General also underscored the importance of creating exchanges for technology co-operation and co-development in order to reduce the cost and deployment time of low emission technologies.
