VIENNA, 25 November 2025 - Today, the international community observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marking the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. UNIDO stands in solidarity with the victims and survivors of gender-based violence and joins the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE initiative, calling for #NoExcuse for violence against women and girls.

On this occasion, UNIDO underscored the urgent need to address violence against women and girls during a special reception at the Vienna International Centre. This event was held on the the margins of the fifty-second session of the Industrial Development Board.

In his opening remarks, Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO, stressed the significance of collective action, stating that “together, we can help break the structures that enable violence and inequality. Empowering women is one of the most effective tools in the fight against gender-based violence.” Müller highlighted UNIDO’s commitment to fostering opportunities for women, including access to quality education and training, jobs, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles. He further noted that 73% of UNIDO’s recent projects are directly advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, reflecting the organization’s dedication to transformative change.

Similarly, Ghada Fathi Waly, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, emphasized that education is fundamental to preventing violence, stating, “Prevention starts very early on, it starts with education of both boys and girls.” She called on all countries and governments to invest in education that empowers, builds resilience, and leaves no one behind.

Creative contributions by the Permanent Missions of Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt and Italy to the International Organizations in Vienna highlighted the severe consequences of violence on victims and survivors, as well as the resilience and courage shown by women in the face of abuse. Short films, vocal and dance performances expressed the voices of women, and the artworks of Italian artist Giulia Neri portrayed the world of women between gender-based violence and women’s empowerment. The Austrian NGO NACHBARINNEN shared insights into their work supporting women and girls, mostly those with migration background, who have experienced violence or are at risk.

Women are more likely to face sexual violence and harassment in the workplace. These incidents often go unreported due to the fear of retaliation or negative consequences. Beyond the immediate harm, gender-based violence also restricts women's access to resources and opportunities, hindering their economic growth, preventing them from realizing their full potential.

As part of UNIDO’s support to establishing and sustainably operating integrated agro-industrial parks and rural transformation centers in Ethiopia, the Organization, in cooperation with UNDOC, helps to establish a work environment that is free from gender-based violence and harassment.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo and in South Sudan, UNIDO supports victims and survivors of gender-based violence and women at risk. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, vulnerable women have been equipped with a bioethanol production unit and trained in income generating activities related to production of bioethanol for disinfectant. These efforts provide women with the tools to rebuild their lives and achieve economic independence.

In South Sudan, women and survivors of gender-based violence,  have been equipped with the knowledge and skills on how to produce edible oil and other basic processed foods while meeting quality and hygiene standards, and on how to establish and run a business. Coupled with the creation of village savings and loan associations, this led to an improved economic situation and confidence of women.

By supporting campaigns against gender-based violence and actively advocating for women’s economic empowerment, UNIDO strengthens its commitment to a future where women are free from violence and empowered to achieve their full potential.
