UNIDO and the European Union to support the participation of Armenia in the International Metrology System
17 August 2022
YEREWAN, 17 August 2022 - Within the framework of its project “Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia”, which is funded by the European Union (EU), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organized workshops for decision makers of the Armenian government and for high level officers of the National Body of Standards and Metrology on how to participate in the International Metrology System.
The two workshops were organized with the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and sought to improve the understanding on the benefits and costs of participating in international metrology organizations.
“Metrology is an important field that can significantly facilitate our economic development and the current project is a great assistance to bring Armenia into the international metrology system”, said Narek Teryan, Deputy Minister of Economy of Armenia. “Metrology will strengthen the capacities of our specialists and will ensure the efficient development of the sector”.
The workshops also allowed for an improved perception on the position of metrology in a holistic Quality Infrastructure System and provided additional information on good practices in developing the institutional and legislative framework for national metrology systems as well as on the international framework established for promoting mutual recognition of certification and measurement capabilities.
“These workshops are of utmost importance as without relevance to internationally recognized standards nothing can be done”, said Karen Azaryan, Representative from the EU Delegation to Armenia. “We have to act together in order to facilitate the development of business in Armenia and to increase the competitiveness among the producers as well as to enable a better access of local producers to external market”.
Currently, the Republic of Armenia is neither a member of the BIPM nor of the OIML, and its participation in both international organizations is critical to develop the National Body of Standards and Metrology into an internationally recognized national metrology institute.
“This is the biggest EU contribution through UNIDO to the Government”, said Anahit Simonyan, UNIDO Representative to Armenia. “It is very significant that this project will have concrete, definite outputs, but it will not be a stand-alone project as it will also have a multiplier, multisectoral effect”.
