UNIDO-GEF Cooperation
The UNIDO-GEF partnership works towards safeguarding the global environment by supporting developing countries meet their commitments under environmental conventions, while also promoting and accelerating inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The cooperation serves as a mechanism to provide incremental financing helping countries achieve the agreed upon global environmental benefits (GEBs), while leveraging the required co-financing from a variety of public and private sector partners. Over the past decades, UNIDO and GEF have worked on over 400 projects in over 100 countries covering a variety of environmental and industrial development issues.
Through GEF-financed projects, UNIDO helped countries reduce over 60 million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through projects that promote clean energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable industrial practices. UNIDO also worked with beneficiaries to eliminate and safeguard more than 12,000 tons of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and to promote climate-smart land and water management practices.
The UNIDO-GEF portfolio helps empower women and girls in the industrial sector and works on actively engaging and capacitating its project stakeholders. Over the years, UNIDO has trained over 5,000 technical experts and supported over 20,000 beneficiaries under UNIDO GEF-funded projects.
