The leather sector is often leveraged in growing economies to create thousands of jobs and earn foreign currency, but OSH standards are poor due to the lack of structures, organisation and experience. To protect workers and the jobs created by tanneries, special care must be taken to raise awareness of the risks and hazards during the leather making process as well as to constantly improve working conditions and safety standards. 

The wide range of chemicals, machinery, equipment and processes used in the tanning industry can pose several occupational hazards and risks for workers, especially in countries with weak law enforcement. In such countries there is often poor safety management, lack of know-how, no training and little awareness of the dangers that may occur during leather manufacturing. 

This course is based on best practices used around the world in well established tanneries and companies representing different industries but sharing the same or similar work hazards and risks. Official international regulations and standards have also been referenced. 

This course is divided into eight modules - each module delves into an important health and safety aspect. Look out for practical advice, helpful hints, downloadable checklists or forms as well as links to useful materials.
