World Statistics on Mining and Utilities

During the last decades, statistics on energy production sectors have increased in importance and the demand for mining and utility data among international data users, especially knowledge institutions and development partners, has grown. Therefore, in the interest of international data users, the UNIDO Statistics Unit, in consultation with the United Nations Statistics Division, has decided to compile statistics on mining and utilities for worldwide dissemination.

Title
World Statistics on Mining and Utilities, 2018

Abstract

World Statistics on Mining and Utilities provides a unique biennial overview of the role of mining and utility activities in the world economy. This extensive resource from UNIDO provides detailed time series data on the level, structure and growth of international mining and utility activities by country and sector. Country level data are clearly presented on the number of establishments, employment and output of activities such as: coal, iron ore, and crude petroleum mining as well as production and supply of electricity, natural gas and water.

The unique and comprehensive source of information meets the growing demand of data users who require detailed and reliable statistical information on the primary industry and energy producing sectors. The publication provides internationally comparable data to economic researches, development strategists and business communities who influence the policy of industrial development and its environmental sustainability. Mining and Utilities 2016 statistics are compiled using data collected by UNIDO from the National Statistical Offices, as well as those obtained from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (for OECD member countries) and from the United Nations Statistics Division.

The publication contains five principle indicators of industrial statistics:

  • Number of establishments.
  • Number of employees.
  • Wages and salaries.
  • Output.
  • Value added.

Data relate to such energy producing sectors as the production of coal, crude petroleum, natural gas and iron ores and the production and distribution of electricity.

It complements the International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics, published by UNIDO since 1995 for the manufacturing sector.
