Cutting industrial greenhouse gas emissions is vital to achieving global climate goals. The scale of the transformation needed requires significant innovation, technology collaboration and investment. At COP29, UNIDO will announce new initiatives together with its partners, foster meaningful dialogue among stakeholders, deliver innovative solutions and identify critical actions needed to accelerate industrial decarbonization and turn the emission curve downwards by 2030. UNIDO will zoom in on the decarbonization of high emitting industries, such as steel, cement and concrete.

The event will feature a panel of experts presenting perspectives from finance, technology, and policy, as well as present UNIDO’s NDC Industry Decarbonization Support toolkit for NDCs 3.0, which provides practical guidance to countries for aligning industries with net-zero targets.

This event will bring together stakeholders from emerging and developing economies alongside key institutions working towards decarbonization of heavy-emitting industries like steel and cement, crucial for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. Ahead of the launch of the Global Matchmaking Platform (GMP) for industrial decarbonisation, scheduled to take place later in the day, this event will showcase pilot programs, share early experiences, and highlight the potential of the GMP to facilitate international cooperation to unlock finance and technology deployment. Key stakeholders, including delivery partners and recipient countries, will share the actions they are taking to help decarbonize their industrial sector.

This Ministerial event, organized by the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan in partnership with UNIDO, UNECE, UN ESCAP, IEA, IRENA and other key international stakeholders, aims to launch the COP29 energy initiatives, namely the COP29 Green Energy Pledge: Green Energy Zones and Corridors, the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, and the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration.

Experts from the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) will explore key technological advancements and solutions required to achieve the goals of the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge. This pledge sets an ambitious global target to increase installed energy storage capacity to 1,500 GW by 2030 and enhance grid infrastructure by adding or refurbishing over 80 million kilometers of grids by 2040. The discussion will focus on identifying technical barriers and the innovative solutions that can drive progress toward these global targets.
