COP29 banner climate adaptation

UNIDO stands at the forefront of innovation for climate adaptation and building resilience to the impacts of climate change. At COP29, UNIDO will showcase innovative adaptation solutions to empower vulnerable communities and livelihoods. A central topic of discussion will be the vital role of micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in driving investments and developing locally-led innovative solutions for climate adaptation. UNIDO will also lead three strategic dialogues on identifying and deploying innovative, cost-effective adaptation solutions that enhance resilience in food, water, and energy sectors. Separate events will be dedicated to discussing the insights from the Climate Adaptation Innovation Learning (CAIL) project.  UNIDO is providing support to the UNFCCC Tecnology Executive Committee in organizing the Technology Day under the theme "Transformative Industry".

Wednesday, World Leaders Climate Action Summit

Investing in climate resilience and adaptation is an unavoidable opportunity. Globally, companies are already innovating on products and services that will make communities, business, and nations more resilient to climate change. As businesses respond to demands in the market with their products and services, private sector investors can support their innovation and growth. How do investors identify the unavoidable opportunity for their portfolios? How do public sector organizations like DFIs mitigate risk for private sector investors through blended finance vehicles and investment guarantees? Since climate adaptation and resilience is a lens not a sector, and pans every region and sector, how do we create consistency in impact frameworks? And how do we strengthen and meet the financial needs of pipeline companies?

Multilateral Climate Funds Pavilion

This side event will demonstrate how next-generation Climate Information and Early Warning Systems (CIEWS), driven by technology and innovation, can accelerate climate adaptation, enhance preparedness, and mitigate disaster impacts. With the growing intensity of climate-related disasters, there is an urgent need to develop and scale up next-generation Early Warning Systems (EWS) that leverage cutting-edge technologies and data-driven innovations. These advanced systems provide more accurate, timely, and actionable warnings, enhancing preparedness and response capabilities. This event will spotlight the transformative role of technology and innovation in creating next-generation CIEWS that empower communities and governments to take proactive and informed actions in the face of climate change, improving resilience and reducing disaster risks.

Thursday, Thematic day on Finance, Investment and Trade

This side event will adopt the World Café format, providing an interactive, engaging and collaborative platform to discuss key questions aimed at stimulating private sector engagement in climate adaptation. The event will consist of roundtable discussions, each dedicated to one of the key themes of CAIL’s Communities of Practice. Participants will be divided into small focus groups, with each group seated at a different table. Each Community lead will introduce the key questions and act as a facilitator, allowing participants to share insights, experiences, and lessons learned. The facilitators will moderate the discussions and take note of the key discussion points. After the roundtable discussions, the facilitators will present a summary of the main takeaways, fostering reflection on the overall insights shared. A knowledge product will be produced to capture the discussions and published on the CAIL website.
