COP29 banner just transition

The transition to sustainable energy systems is essential for addressing global climate challenges, and it must be fair and inclusive, ensuring that no one is left behind. At COP29, UNIDO will emphasize the critical role of innovation, technology, ecosystems-building and investment facilitation in achieving just energy transitions. UNIDO will showcase tangible solutions that can decouple industrial growth from emissions while promoting social and economic equity, present strategies that support energy access, build resilient renewable energy supply chains, and promote inclusive industrial development as well as highlight UNIDO’s work in empowering women and engaging youth in just energy transitions.

Thursday, Thematic day on Finance, Investment and Trade

The COP29 side event, “Partnerships to Strengthen Climate Resilience in Least Developed Countries,” brings together key stakeholders to address the urgent climate challenges facing LDCs, who are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Despite minimal contributions to global emissions, LDCs face significant vulnerability due to limited adaptive capacity. Supported by UNIDO, GEF, Climate Analytics, and IIED, this event underscores a commitment to bolstering LDC resilience through coordinated action, resource access, and partnership building. A joint statement will be announced, reaffirming strengthened partnerships to support adaptation, resilience, and access to climate finance, and fostering collaboration for long-term climate action.

This event announces the new “Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa – EELA” program and its partnership opportunities, particularly with the private sector. Building on the successful regional EELA project in the SADC and EAC regions, the program promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth through energy efficiency interventions. It aims to transform markets for energy-efficient appliances, enhance policies, increase industrial investments, and support local value chains.

The project has been scaled up to a program and includes regional interventions in ECOWAS, the EAC and the SADC region as well as multiple EELA Country Windows such as in Kenya, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Additionally, the EELA Industry Clean-Tech Platform is being launched. It aims to create demand for low-carbon technologies, support technology transfer, and improve access to financing.

This session has two parts, the first segment is a high-level panel with goodwill messages from global partners to lend their support to the ground-breaking initiative -the African Women Clean Cooking Support Programme (AWCCSP) championed by H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and launched on the margins of the Conference of Parties (COP) 28 held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2023. The second segment will showcase partnership with global actors to mobilize the pledged financial resources (USD 2.2 billion)  to implement the Clean Cooking Declaration: Making 2024 the Pivotal Year for Clean Cooking that was adopted at the Paris Summit.

Friday, Thematic day on Energy/Peace, Relief and Recovery

Most of the population lacking access to clean cooking are poor and unable to transition to imported fuels even when they are heavily subsidized. Furthermore, countries with high access deficit are also facing debt distress, inflation, currency devaluation and other macro-economic challenges. Renewable-based clean cooking solutions (RBCS), when linked to local value chains, not only offers a realistic pathway for all to transition; but also yields climate change-related benefits, fuel saving opportunities and co-benefits arising from supply chains across other sectors such as agriculture.  The session will explore the collective role of renewables in the clean cooking transition and achieving net zero emissions from cooking by 2050.

The event, led by UNIDO’s Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP), will focus on UNIDO’s role in advancing Just Energy Transitions (JET) as a key driver of sustainable industrial development. Through the context of GCIP, the event will highlight how UNIDO advances JET through its work to support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) with the climate mitigation potential. The event will also feature the launch of the GCIP-led and energy-focused global innovation challenges under the umbrella name of "Just Transition to the Future" (JTF), which promote collaboration across stakeholders and geographical scales to accelerate JET.

The side-event on the launch of the Clean Energy Centre of the ECO region (CECECO) is jointly hosted by the Government of Azerbaijan, UNIDO and the Secretariat of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

CECECO, hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan and developed under the Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (GN-SEC) of UNIDO, aims to accelerate the energy and climate transition by providing comprehensive support "from the region for the region". It will complement ECO Member States’ efforts to promote and attract sustainable green energy investments and to consolidate public-private partnerships.

This event will highlight CECECO’s future role in leading the energy transition, showcase the progress made towards its establishment, and outline the key next steps and support needed for its full operationalization.
