Saturday, Thematic day on Science, Technology and Innovation / Digitalization

As digital infrastructure grows, so does its environmental footprint. This session, led by ITU and UNIDO, will examine both the successes and ongoing challenges in making AI and computing more sustainable. With input from industry leaders, government representatives, and sustainability experts, the discussion will highlight practical examples where AI has reduced energy use and emissions and address gaps such as inconsistent reporting and varying levels of commitment across sectors. ITU’s leadership in digital sustainability and UNIDO’s commitment to green industrial practices provide a foundation for cross-sector dialogue, aimed at guiding organizations toward adopting greener technologies and policies. The session aspires to build momentum for sustainable AI practices that support global environmental goals.

As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries worldwide, its environmental impact brings new challenges. This session will explore two important initiatives focused on sustainable AI practices. UNIDO’s AIM GREEN Index, developed with the Beijing Institute of Technology, provides a benchmark for assessing AI’s environmental impact by measuring energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and resource use. Alongside, ITU’s Green Digital Action Pillar examines how ICT companies are addressing sustainability through energy-efficient technologies, optimized AI models, and greater reliance on carbon-free energy sources. Together, these initiatives offer a clear perspective on how the AI and ICT sectors can support global climate goals and encourage sustainable practices across industries.
